As someone who doesn’t drink alcohol, I usually stick to ordering water or Diet Coke whenever I go out to a restaurant. I know mocktails have been growing in popularity lately, especially here in Portland, but I never know what I’m going to like! A few months ago, a friend and I had a girls’ night out at a cute little pub, and she encouraged me to try something new to drink. I figured the best place to start was with the most classic mocktail – a Shirley Temple! When my drink came, it was totally delicious, and I couldn’t believe I had never ordered one before. And of course the next step was to figure out how to make it at home!

This Shirley Temple drink recipe is so simple to make, with just four ingredients (if you include the ice). It gets its flavor from a mixture of grenadine syrup and ginger ale, with a maraschino cherry or two mixed in. I measured everything out pretty exactly when I was making the drink for the first time, but you can definitely be more flexible and add more or less grenadine. In general, you will want about 1 part grenadine to 4 parts ginger ale, but feel free to adjust it to your liking!
